Electrochemical characterization and degradation of carbon fibre reinforced polymer in quiescent near neutral chloride media

Abstract In a quest for better understanding of the mechanism and contribution(s) fresh (“un-degraded”) degraded CFRP surfaces to galvanic corrosion coupled metals in multi-material assemblies electrochemical behaviour quiescent 50 mM NaCl was studied using techniques. Tests ferricyanide/ferrocyanide redox couple revealed quasi-reversible behaviour. Under cathodic polarization, is active electrochemically evidenced by increase pH (to ≥ 10). Galvanic current densities potentials Al-CFRP comprised freshly polished sample ranged from 15–25 µA cm −2 ≈−660 −850 mV SCE respectively, while corresponding parameter were range 10–25 ≈−670 −900 . Contrary expectations, prior exposure degradative high media before coupling did not result an intensity metal.
